What Is Panchang?
Panchang means "five limbs" — the five core elements of the Hindu lunisolar calendar that describe a single day's astrological character.
Tithi
A lunar day, based on the Moon-Sun angular distance advancing by 12°. There are 30 Tithis per lunar month across the Shukla (waxing) and Krishna (waning) Paksha.
Vara
The weekday, each ruled by a specific planet.
Nakshatra
The Moon's lunar mansion for the day — one of 27, each spanning 13°20′.
Yoga
A combined Sun-Moon angular measure, divided into 27 named yogas.
Karana
A half-Tithi, giving a finer-grained daily division traditionally used in Muhurat selection.
Sunrise & Sunset
The reference points from which every inauspicious period and the Abhijit Muhurat are calculated.
Inauspicious & Auspicious Time Windows
Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda & Gulika Kaal
Traditionally considered inauspicious for starting new activities. Each is calculated by dividing the sunrise-to-sunset window into eight equal parts, with the weekday determining which segment belongs to which period.
Abhijit Muhurat
A roughly 48-minute window centered on solar noon, traditionally considered auspicious for most activities — the 8th of 15 equal day segments.
A Note on Precision
Panchang calculations vary slightly across published almanacs depending on the astronomical model and regional conventions used. PalmGuru's calculations are deterministic and reproducible, but like all Panchang publications, are offered for traditional use rather than treated as a single universally exact standard.
